Thread Count — What It Means, and Why It Matters
Thread count refers to the number of horizontal (weft) and vertical (warp) threads woven into one square inch of fabric. While many assume that a higher number automatically means better sheets, true bedding quality depends on far more than thread count alone.
At Martin Corner, we use 100% Egyptian Cotton, crafted in Egypt using long-staple fibers — which means every thread begins with higher natural quality before it ever reaches the loom.
What Truly Defines Quality Bedding
While thread count is one factor, it is not the only indicator of quality. Other critical factors include:
100% Egyptian Cotton
Fiber Quality / Staple Length:
The length of the cotton fibers (staples) is crucial. Long-staple and extra-long-staple cottons (like Egyptian) create stronger, smoother threads that are more durable and soften over time, regardless of a very high thread count.

Ply Construction
Ply is the number of individual yarns twisted together to form a single thread. Manufacturers sometimes use multi-ply, lower-quality yarns to artificially inflate the thread count (e.g., counting a 2-ply yarn as two threads). Single-ply threads, made from high-quality fibers, are generally more durable and breathable.

Material and Weave
Different materials and weaves have different ideal thread counts. Thread count is most applicable to cotton; other materials like linen, flannel, jersey, or microfiber are often measured by weight (GSM - grams per square meter) or momme (for silk). When you feel the overall weight of our Martin Corner 100% Egyptian Cotton Sheets - There will be no doubt that they are of the highest quality even in our lowest thread count.
